Smashwords is an ebook distribution platform, similar to Kindle, where thousands of books are distributed and published by indie authors.
Why Smashwords is significant
This year has been a year of revelation for me about the enormity of power certain entities hold. One such entity is Amazon. During the pandemic, I was grateful to the company for being able to deliver necessities unavailable otherwise during shutdown. However, in the aftermath, as more and more Amazon workers emerged with shocking accounts of terrible working conditions, unreasonable quotas, and strong-arming efforts to crush union organization in Amazon warehouses across the country, I made the decision to withdraw my support from Amazon.
That meant removing my novels from KDP, including cancelling pre-orders for Oracle of Helinthia, and cancelling my KU and Audible subscriptions, and doing all my shopping elsewhere. Etsy has become an absolute favorite online shopping replacement, Libby has been an excelled replacement for audiobooks. And I’ve also had to seek out other places to sell and promote my books.
Enter Smashwords
Smashwords is an ebook distribution platform similar to Amazon, where thousands of books can be purchased, read, reviewed, and loved just like on Kindle Unlimited. Even better, authors who distribute on Smashwords get much higher royalties than KU. The only downside of the platform is that a lot of readers have never heard of Smashwords.
